This is a day in the bay and a couple deeply in love with each other and the world around them.
THE QUEEN OF CANNABIS
By
ARLIN TROUTT
I Met Christie in 1971 at Pete the pilot’s place in Cave Creek. Pete owned a soulful hundred-year-old ranch house that smelled like Mexican marijuana and aviation fuel. Cave Creek was just a cave and a creek back then. Pete and I met when I was playing at the old Blue Goat Pub in Scottsdale before our first sons were born. We were like brothers back then; we both loved Gibsons, Martins, and Acapulco Gold.
I remember the first time I saw Christie like it was yesterday. She was sitting on Pete’s couch with Carla. She was wearing a grey women’s business suit, with horn-rimmed secretary glasses down on her nose. She was breathtakingly beautiful and shockingly straight looking. It was awkward smoking our first joint together. But we were all in a political and cultural state of transition. However, she was of the McCloud Clan, I am a McDole, and we hit it off.
Christie’s family was part of the old Arizona aristocracy, and she owned a life of white privilege and prestige, but she was brilliant and had unmatched talent, rebellious tenacity, and a lot of good luck. To this day, she is and will remain one of the most remarkable women I have ever personally known or anyone else of historical notoriety.
She was not just the Queen of Cannabis; she was the behind the scene Queen of Outlaw Music and powerfully bewitching. She was first married to Richie Albright, one of the great country music star makers and heartbreakers of Nashville. Carla was his babysitter and right-hand woman. But back in the beginning, he was just the unknown Waylon Jennings’ drummer at a bar named Mr. Lucky’s. She was later married to Donnie Buzzard, the world’s greatest steel guitar player. Donnie started playing with Hank Snow in Nashville when he was a teenager. Now Donnie, Waylon and Mr. Lucky’s are long-gone outlaw music legends.
When I first met Willie Nelson, one of his first questions was about playing in “The World’s Greatest Cowboy Band.” with Donnie Buzzard.
But as well as Donnie was known in the Outlaw Music scene, Christie was equally known in the anti-war/marijuana smuggling underworld. She was a part of the U.S v. Jack Strickland case in 1969. This was the very first federal marijuana conspiracy in U.S. history.
This was the beginning of my musical marijuana smuggling days, and the reason marijuana is being “re-legalized” around the world today. It will be a job to explain the magnitude of what we did together, but there was never a dull moment.
She was reckless, fearless, extremely lucky and had few regrets. Christie changed everyone around her, and she changed the world – and that was what she wanted to do. I do not believe for a moment that she is resting in peace, she is watching and waiting.
You will be hearing a lot about her and my family of border cowboys in “Outlaw Tales of the Superstition Mountains”. She is a key figure and a clue to the greatest buried treasure tale ever told.
Hi, I'm Arlin Troutt and I tell untold stories. I'm the guy that never gets the microphone at wedding receptions and funerals. I'm never asked for my opinion. Outlaw Tales of the Superstition Mountains are a series of intertwined stories of evolving modern morality. A rush to judgment is a collection of my unpopular opinions on awkward subjects. This is a short parade of passing thoughts designed to inspire an escape from popular opinion.
